The Basics: What Is a Trading Card Show?
A trading card show (also called a card convention, card meet, or TCG market) is an event where vendors rent table space to buy, sell, and trade collectible cards. Collectors attend to shop, trade, and connect with the community. The format is similar to a flea market or farmers market, but specifically for trading cards — Pokemon, Magic the Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece, sports cards, and more.
GTA TCG shows like those run by Northside TCG typically operate for 5–7 hours (usually mid-morning to early evening), charge no entry fee for attendees, and feature 50–150+ vendor tables depending on the venue size.
When You Walk In
You'll usually enter through a main door into a large hall or gymnasium. The first thing you'll notice is the noise — it's lively. Dozens of conversations happening simultaneously, cards being sleeved and sorted, the occasional excited shout when someone pulls a hit from a pack being cracked on the floor.
Most shows have a simple layout: rows of tables with vendors behind or beside them. Some shows have a map posted at the entrance showing vendor locations by number. If you're looking for a specific type of card, don't be afraid to ask the first vendor you see — TCG communities are generally helpful and will point you in the right direction.
What to Bring
- Cash — Most vendors are cash-only or cash-preferred. ATMs at venues often run out. Bring more than you think you'll spend.
- A list or binder reference — Know what you're looking for. A list on your phone prevents impulse buys you'll regret.
- Cards to sell or trade — Bring a binder or box of cards you're willing to move. Vendors buy, and other collectors will often trade.
- Phone for price-checking — TCGPlayer and eBay sold listings are your best friends. Use them before agreeing to any price.
- A tote bag — You'll accumulate cards quickly. A bag with a flat bottom is better than a drawstring.
- Comfortable shoes — You'll walk for hours.
Understanding Vendor Table Etiquette
Trading card shows have unwritten rules that make the experience better for everyone:
- Ask before picking up displayed cards — Most vendors are fine with it but appreciate being asked for loose cards not in binders.
- Don't monopolize a table — If others are waiting, be efficient. You can always come back.
- Negotiate respectfully — It's completely normal to ask "is this your best price?" but being aggressive or insulting is not acceptable.
- Don't lowball on obviously fairly priced cards — Vendors who price correctly don't deserve 50% offers. Save negotiations for cards priced above market.
Finding the Best Deals
The key to deal-hunting at GTA card shows is knowing market prices before you arrive. Spend 30 minutes the night before your show browsing TCGPlayer and eBay sold listings for the cards on your want list. When you see a card priced below market at a table, you'll recognize it instantly.
Walk the entire show once before buying anything significant. Prices for the same card can vary dramatically from vendor to vendor. A quick lap lets you find the best price before committing.

One of the best things about Northside TCG shows is the live giveaways. Throughout the event, prizes — sealed packs, promo cards, and more — are given away to attendees. You don't have to buy anything to win. Just be present and engaged.
