Why Show Floor Pricing Requires a Different Approach
Online marketplace prices (TCGPlayer, eBay) reflect national and international supply and demand. Show floor prices reflect local supply and demand, immediate liquidity needs, and the competitive pressure of multiple vendors sitting 10 feet from each other. A card listed at $40 on TCGPlayer might move for $28–$32 at a GTA card show, or $38 if you're the only vendor carrying it.
Understanding this distinction — and pricing accordingly — is the difference between vendors who sell through 80% of their inventory by end of day versus those who pack everything back up at 7 PM.
Step 1: Establish Market Price
For every card you plan to sell, check two sources:
- TCGPlayer Market Price — This is the actual average transaction price (not the lowest listed price). Use the "Market Price" column, not "Low." This represents what cards are actually selling for nationwide.
- eBay Sold Listings — Filter by "Sold" items in the last 30 days. Especially important for graded cards, vintage pieces, or any card above $30 where recent transaction data matters more than TCGPlayer's sometimes-delayed market data.
For Canadian show pricing, US-dollar TCGPlayer prices need to be converted to CAD using current exchange rates. In 2026, rough guidance is to multiply USD prices by 1.35–1.40 for a CAD equivalent, then discount from there for show-floor pricing.
Step 2: Assess Your Card's Condition Honestly
TCGPlayer market price assumes Near Mint (NM) condition. Adjust down for:
- Lightly Played (LP): 10–15% below NM market. Minor whitening on edges, very light surface scuffs.
- Moderately Played (MP): 30–40% below NM. Visible wear, some creasing, noticeable edge whitening.
- Heavily Played (HP): 50%+ below NM. This is buylist territory — shops may not even buy HP for certain cards.
Be honest with yourself. Overgraded cards that buyers inspect and reject create friction, slow your table down, and damage your reputation.
Step 3: Apply Show Floor Pricing Logic
General framework for show pricing once you have market price and condition grade:
- Cards under $5: Price at 70–80% of TCGPlayer market (or NM price for the condition). Buyers expect bulk deals at shows. Lots of $1–$3 cards add up over a day.
- Cards $5–$20: Price at 80–85% of market. Slightly below online prices to justify the immediate purchase vs. waiting for an online order.
- Cards $20–$100: Price at 85–90% of market. Leave some room to negotiate — buyers in this range expect to be able to "make a deal."
- Cards over $100: Price at or near market, negotiate from there. At this price point, buyers are researching before they approach you. Being obviously below market creates suspicion, not faster sales.
Step 4: Pre-Organize Your Pricing System
The night before a Northside TCG show in Mississauga or any GTA card show, get your pricing organized:
- Write prices directly on top of card sleeves with a sticker or price label
- Or organize binders into clearly labeled sections by price range ("all cards in this section $5 each")
- Have a separate "negotiation rack" for high-value cards with room to deal
Pre-pricing every card individually takes time but dramatically speeds up transactions on the show floor. Buyers who can see prices without asking are more likely to browse deeply and buy more.
Adapting Prices During the Show
Show pricing isn't static. If multiple people ask for the same card but don't buy because "it's a bit high," your price is wrong. If a card sells in the first 30 minutes, you may have priced too low. Adjust in real-time based on buyer behavior.
In the last 90 minutes of any show, it's worth offering bundle discounts to clear remaining inventory. Cards you pack up are money you didn't make.
